::Craft Tutorial::

~Crackled Easter Eggs~

I made a dozen of 4" jewel toned eggs last year to place in a large basket in front of my fireplace.
My oldest daughter couldn't stop looking at them when she visited on Easter Sunday.

She kept saying, "They are just beautiful!"

This great project is easy enough for children to help with.
A great Spring Break activity!

You begin this project with purchased papier mache eggs
so you can have several dozen finished in no time at all.

::Pastel crackled eggs nestled in my newly planted window herb garden::

::Chocolate Brown crackled egg picks added to a chamber pot flower arrangement in my Shabby Chic bathroom::
The egg picks can be added to potted plants and arrangements to bring a decorator touch to every room!
Simply paint eggs to match the color scheme!

Supply List:
Old Coffee Can...to hold eggs while drying
Wax Paper or Newspaper...to cover working surface
Papier Mache Eggs...purchased at craft store (I found mine at Hobby Lobby and they come in various sizes starting at 3/$1) Bamboo Shish Kabob Sticks ($1 for 100 at Wal-Mart)
1" Foam Brushes
Paper Plates for paints
Sponge...for painting
Acrylic Paints...in your choice of colors
Folk Art Crackle Medium...2 oz. bottle
Brush On Water Based Sealant...you will find in the acrylic paint section of your craft store and you can use either a matte or gloss finish depending on your preference.

Step 1:
Insert bamboo sticks into eggs for ease in painting and drying.  They will usually push right into the egg since they have a point on them, but I did have a few stubborn ones.  I used a large needle to start a tiny hole and then the bamboo stick went right in.

Step 2:

Using a foam brush, base coat each egg with a single coat of paint. Place the wet eggs in the coffee can and let dry thoroughly.

***NOTE:  Keep in mind that if you are using pastel colored paint for your eggs, you will need to use a dark base coat (black or brown).  If you are using darker colors for your eggs, you will need to use a light base coat (I recommend Folk Art Metallic Pearl White for a little shimmer...this is what I used on my Chocolate Brown eggs, with a dark brown top coat)

Step 3:
Using a foam brush apply a generous coat of the Crackle Medium to each egg.  Return to the coffee can to dry thoroughly.

Step 4:
I like to use a sponge to apply the top coat.  Using a sponge gives a more even top coat without streaking. Squirt a 2" circle of paint onto a paper plate and then dab the sponge into the paint and then using a dabbing motion apply the desired top coat paint to each egg, thoroughly covering the bottom color.  Work quickly, as you can see in the chocolate brown picture, as soon as the paint begins to dry, the cracks start appearing...like magic!  Don't worry about the tiny bubbles on the surface created by the sponge, they will go away as the paint dries!  Return to the coffee can to dry thoroughly.

The brightly colored eggs shown in this basket have streaks from using a brush to apply the top coat.

Step 5:
Apply a sealer and allow to dry thoroughly.  Remove bamboo sticks on eggs that you want to place in a basket...keep the sticks in place to use the eggs as plant picks.

I hope you enjoy this little craft project.

Happy Easter!!!
